baby name wizard – try your name

most baby name lists present data statically: all you know is the rank order of the most to least popular names for the previous year. that’s interesting, but doesn’t really show the distribution of a certain name’s popularity.
the social security administration gives a bit more depth, showing top 1000 names between 1879 and the present. it also shows the total number or percent of total births. it’s easier to see the distribution within a single year, but it’s hard to see the distribution over multiple years and pick out trends.
enter laura wattenburg. she rocks. her site – – has the coolest way to present data since charles minard charted napoleon’s entry and retreat in the russian campaign of 1812. it just makes it so easy to see naming trends. her book, the baby name wizard, is succinct and clear. even if you’re not naming a kid, you should check this site out. try your own name. very cool.
