the surgery went "very well" today in the words on dr mee. in six
hours he and his team switched the arteries, re-routed the veins
through a senning procedure, and closed the vsd hole with a dacron
patch. this was a major surgery and amelia knew it. she was totally
wired last night, staying up most of the night nervously smiling and
laughing with me and julia. i kept looking into her deep blue eyes and
repeating in my head "believe, believe" to let her know that she was
going to make it.

after the surgery we got to see her again in the intensive care unit.
she was still knocked out by the anesthesia and morphine drip,
strangely calm except for the rise and fall of her chest. though a
large chunk of the risk is behind us, there remain some big
steps ahead. she needs to come off the anesthesia and breathing tube
over next day or so, and then move out of the intensive care unit to a
recovery room. despite her current inactivity and the multitude of
lines sticking out from her, i can only see the same wiggly, bright
eyed girl as last night. i know she’s going to be fine.
