Engineering/marketing manager, family guy. My personal blog with a few work thoughts mixed in.

We’ve joined Windows

We knew it would happen eventually: MSN has finally joined Windows. Though Steve Ballmer consolidated the two groups under Kevin Johnson a few months ago, and I’ve been working on new Windows Live branded services for at least 6 months, the big re-org has finally been released on the divisions.

Engineering for Windows (client) and Windows Live (internet services) are now under Steven Sinofsky, a well respected manager who made his name in Office. From his blog he seems like a good guy who has some clear views on how engineering should operate. His views seem a little old school and not agile like we’re trying to be on my products, but he’s articulate about the reasons. He’s successfully led some HUGE engineering projects so he’s obviously someone to take seriously.

My exact org position is still to be defined. Right now we’re under Martin Taylor, a Senior VP who made his name leading the successful Linux Compete effort and who reports to David Cole as part of the Online Business Group. I and my team are pretty clear on what we work on and we’re enjoying it, so I don’t expect much impact on us. But since this is a big re-org, I expect a lot of craziness over the next 30 days or so.
