Happy Birthday, Amelia

Salmon return, jumping cleanly
Up the kaleidoscope heart.
The infant becomes a girl.
Amelia turns 1 today. It’s the time of year when the salmon are starting to run through the Ballard locks, climbing the fish ladders to reach their spawning grounds in the rivers that feed Lake Washington. The annual cycle of the run reminds me of the flow of blood through Amelia’s patchwork heart: I’m amazed that despite the obstacles it somehow works. I’m also thankful that Amelia has survived her first critical year (see my post from last summer), and full of hope for her future.
