Facebook wins, Twitter will fade

with 2 comments

Facebook announced a bag of tools for publishers at their f8 development conference last week. I run a product team for BuddyTV, the #190 largest site on the Internet with nearly 8 million monthly visitors, and these tools are going to be the basis for everything we do to make our site more social and interactive. Currently, we face 5-6 different choices for login, sharing, and comments: we can use Facebook, Yahoo, MySpace, Windows Live, homegrown tools, and on and on. It’s a real pain trying to figure out how to integrate them all, and not confuse our users. Now Facebook, which has 500 million users, also has the best tools. Talk about network effects. I think that’s it, Facebook will soon have full control over our true identity on the Internet, and no one will be able to catch them.

A year ago Twitter was experiencing exponential growth, and was the hot company. Bucking the hype, I called Twitter a fad and compared it to a Rubix Cube. The Cube is still the most popular toy of all time, but no one really plays with it anymore today. Look for the same to happen to Twitter.
